Clean the condenser coils twice a year. Dust and pet hair on the coils (usually behind or underneath the unit) make the compressor work harder and shortens its life. A vacuum attachment or coil brush takes just a few minutes.

Check the door seals. Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out easily, the gasket has lost its grip and is letting cold air escape.

Keep it at 37–40°F / 0°F. Colder isn't better; it just runs the compressor harder for no benefit. Use an appliance thermometer if the dial ever seems off.

Don't overpack the shelves. Air needs to circulate around food to keep temperatures even. A packed fridge runs longer and less efficiently.

Replace the water filter every 6 months. On models with an ice or water dispenser, an old filter restricts flow and can affect taste.

Leave breathing room. A couple inches of clearance behind and above the unit lets heat escape instead of building up around the compressor.

Leave the door or lid cracked open between loads. Especially on front-load machines, this is the single best way to prevent the musty smell that builds up in a sealed, damp drum.

Run a monthly cleaning cycle. Hot water with a washer cleaner (or a cup of vinegar) clears out detergent residue and buildup that a normal wash cycle leaves behind.

Don't overload it. A packed drum strains the motor and bearings and often leaves clothes less clean, since there's no room for water and detergent to circulate.

Use the right detergent. High-efficiency (HE) machines need HE detergent; regular detergent oversudses, which can leave residue and even trigger error codes.

Check that it's level. An unlevel washer vibrates and "walks" during the spin cycle, which wears out bearings and suspension parts years before it should.

Clean the lint trap after every single load. This is the #1 fire-prevention step for any dryer, no exceptions.

Have the exhaust duct cleaned yearly. Lint builds up inside the vent duct itself, not just the trap; a clogged duct is a real fire risk and makes the dryer run hotter and longer.

Don't overload it. Besides taking longer to dry, an overstuffed drum restricts airflow and puts extra wear on the belt and motor.

Keep the outside vent flap clear. Leaves, snow, or debris blocking the exterior vent forces the dryer to work much harder than it should.

Wipe up spills while the oven is warm, not hot. Baked-on spills are harder to remove later and can smoke the next time the oven heats up.

Keep gas burner ports clear. A toothpick or fine wire clears clogged ports so the flame burns even and blue instead of yellow and uneven.

Go easy on the self-clean cycle. The extreme heat it uses is hard on heating elements, seals, and electronics; a damp-cloth wipe-down handles most day-to-day messes just fine.

Check the oven temperature occasionally. Thermostats can drift over the years, so an inexpensive oven thermometer will tell you if "350°F" really means 350°F.

Clean the bottom filter monthly. Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter that traps food debris. If it's never cleaned, dishes come out gritty and the machine works harder.

Run an empty hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner monthly. This clears grease and mineral buildup that a normal load with dishes in it doesn't fully wash away.

Scrape, don't rinse. Modern dishwashers are designed to handle food debris; heavy pre-rinsing just wastes water and can confuse sensors that measure how dirty the load is.

Check the spray arms. If the holes get clogged with mineral deposits, water can't reach every dish evenly. A toothpick clears them right out.

Wipe up spills right away. Sugary or greasy splatters left to bake on can eventually cause arcing or damage the interior coating.

Never run it empty. Without food or liquid to absorb the energy, an empty microwave can damage the magnetron, the part that generates the heat.

Use a microwave-safe cover. It stops splatters before they happen and helps food heat more evenly.
